Backtesting
How to Run a Backtest
A complete guide to configuring and running backtests.
Running a backtest in Tradient takes just a few clicks, but choosing the right settings is important for meaningful results.
Backtest Settings
- Instrument — Choose the market to test on (forex pairs, crypto, stocks, indices)
- Timeframe — Select the chart timeframe (1-minute to monthly)
- Date Range — Choose the historical period to test. Longer periods give more data but take longer to process
- Starting Capital — Set your simulated account balance
- Commission — Set the trading costs per trade to match your broker
- Slippage — Add simulated slippage for more realistic results
Running the Backtest
- 1Open your strategy and click Backtest
- 2Configure the settings listed above
- 3Click Run Backtest to start the simulation
- 4Wait for processing — simple strategies on shorter periods complete in seconds
- 5Review the results in the performance report
Start with a 2-3 year backtest period on a single instrument. Once you're satisfied with results, test on longer periods and different instruments.
